Positive Public Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding isn’t something that I have partaken in, but I most certainly have facilitated many a feed. Allow me to explain…

Just as I mentioned in my previous post, I was a bit on the back foot when we started breastfeeding our first one, but when we went out, my skills in “Man protecting breastfeeding mum” really started to shine!

By the time we went out for our first trip into the great outdoors, I was not weirded out by breastfeeding at all, and from what I could tell, neither was my wife. She was way more concerned than I was about an unnoticed “nip-slip” than I was though!

I’m quite an open and outgoing guy, and naturally thought everyone else was, but I had to set the right level for how the majority of the public felt about breastfeeding. Not that they found it disgusting and wrong, but that they were always surprised by an obvious, but accidental, nip-slip.

To avoid these, I would always position myself in a way that would ultimately put my wife at ease, and she didn’t have to worry about unexpected incidents, as I was effectively blocking the public’s view.

Another thing that I encountered (very rarely) was people noticing and commenting that my wife was breastfeeding. I found that not drawing attention to it and accepting it as normal (breastfeeding a baby is normal anyways) also helped encourage calmness and tranquility 🙂

We never had any issues, any comments, any confrontations when breastfeeding in public. Even in a time where pictures of women with very little clothing are everywhere, I think people are starting to make the distinction between breasts as pleasure, and breasts as the most natural and best source of feeding for babies.

With all the discussions I have at work and friendship circles, the majority of families are breastfeeding babies.
