- Increased attachment bonding
- Keeping getting all the good antibodies and health benefits
- Being able to soothe if a fall or accident occurs, which they do later on 🙂
- and loads more…
If our girls wanted milk, then they got milk. The plan was keep giving it until they stop asking for it 🙂
Now, going back to people getting bent out of shape. I’ve seen extended family members and friends who are like, “why are you still doing it?” or “You’re going to still be doing it until they’re 12”. This can all be sorted by making them aware of the reasons and benefits.
Believe it or not, I’ve even heard of some dads who find it odd that feeding goes beyond a year!
Extended breastfeeding wasn’t an issue for me, but thinking from a dad perspective, these could be potential reasons why it is for some…
- just awareness issues
- life is going to be better when we stop breastfeeding
- breastfeeding is a barrier to getting them into their own room (I would advise co-sleeping #awesome #benefits)
- breastfeeding is a barrier to sex (may see breasts as baby domain, and off limits to sex)
Just to focus on the sex issue, which I didn’t find a problem, but if it is, then I would suggest that if you’ve mentally got over poking the baby during sex in pregnancy, then one can get over the versatility of breasts 😀
Mine was sad, I fed twins and that in itself was pretty tricky, but managed for 5 and a half months. I so wanted to be a Mum who fed for quite a long period, but proud I did that far even with a mastitis attack and Drs saying give up. final feed, sad, wistful, a sense of loss, but then pride, anticipation for being freer to move about haha.

Unfortunately with my first I only fed her for 2 weeks, but am 30 weeks pregnant now with my second and determined to make it work this time. So hopefully that final feed will be a lot later on x

Great post, I totally agree that breastfeeding should happen for as long as mum and child want it too. It’s a bit of a strange thing to think that at 6 months and 1 day no more boobs? (which is exactly what i thought would happy when I was thinking about breastfeeding when I was pregnant!)
No last feed here, my daughter is still breastfeeding at 20 months and I hope to let her self wean.
